About these end of the year worksheets

The last weeks of school are a time to look back and celebrate. These end of the year worksheets help children remember their year, feel proud of what they learned and get excited for the next grade.

Preschoolers draw their teacher and friends in a My Preschool Year page, count and dot school things, color a school bus by number and take home a preschool graduation certificate. Kindergartners fill in a six-page memory book, write about next year in 1st grade, listen to a last day of school story and receive a kindergarten graduation certificate or a class award. 1st graders read a story about saying goodbye to 1st grade, review addition and subtraction within 20, write a letter to a future 1st grader and complete their own memory book.

Every page is black and white, prints on US Letter or A4, and pages with one right answer have an answer key on page 2.

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1–20, count out that many objects.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.2Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

How to use them

  1. Start the memory book a week or two before the last day. One page a day is plenty, and children can take the finished book home.
  2. Fill in the graduation certificates and class awards ahead of time, and hand them out at a class celebration.
  3. Use the 1st grade math review as a friendly check of what children can do, not a test.
  4. Read the last day of school story, then talk about what children will miss and what they look forward to.

Teaching tips

  • Some children feel sad or worried at the end of the year. The "next year I will" pages give them a happy thing to picture.
  • Choose a class award that fits every child, so each one goes home proud.
  • For the memory book, a grown-up can write words a child says beside the drawings.
  • Keep a copy of a few memory book pages to share with next year's teacher.

Questions teachers and parents ask

When should I start end of the year activities?

About two weeks before the last day. That leaves time for a memory book page a day and a class celebration with certificates and awards.

Is there a preschool graduation certificate?

Yes. There is a preschool graduation certificate and a kindergarten graduation certificate, each with lines for the child's name, the teacher and the date.

What is in the memory book?

Six pages: a cover with a drawing of the child, my teacher, my friends, my favorite day, what I learned and next year. Each page has a big box to draw and writing lines that start with a traced sentence.

Do the pages have answer keys?

Every page with one right answer has an answer key on page 2. Memory books, certificates, drawing and writing pages do not need one.
