About these letter X worksheets

These letter X worksheets cover uppercase X, lowercase x, the words ax, box and fox, and a letter hunt with an answer key. X is unusual. Very few words kindergartners know start with it, and its usual sound, /ks/, comes at the end of words like box and fox. That is why the words on this page end with x instead of starting with it.

X is two slants that cross in the middle. Uppercase and lowercase x are the same shape in two sizes. The main thing to get right is the crossing point: the lines should meet halfway down, not near the top or the bottom.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.APrint many upper- and lowercase letters.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.DRecognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

How to use them

  1. On the uppercase page, have your child make the slant from the top left first, lift, then make the slant from the top right.
  2. On the lowercase page, check that both slants start at the dashed midline and cross halfway down to the baseline.
  3. Trace ax, box and fox. Say each word slowly and listen for the /ks/ at the end.
  4. Finish with the letter hunt and check the answer key.

Teaching tips for X

  • Uppercase X: start at the top line on the left and slant down to the right to the baseline. Lift, start at the top line on the right, and slant down to the left to the baseline. Say it while writing: “1. Slant right. Lift. 2. Slant left.”
  • Lowercase x: the same two slants, starting at the dashed midline. Say it while writing: “1. Slant right. Lift. 2. Slant left.”
  • Common mix-ups: an x drawn as a plus sign, lines that cross off-center, and an x made from two separate v shapes.
  • Quick activities: hide paper X’s around a room and draw a simple treasure map where X marks the spot; cross your arms over your chest to make a body X.

Questions about letter X

Why don’t the X words start with X?

Few words kindergartners know begin with x. Xylophone starts with a /z/ sound, and x-ray starts with the letter’s name. Words like box, fox and ax teach the sound x usually makes.

Is X a hard letter to write?

The strokes are easy: two straight slants. The challenge is the crossing point. If the lines miss the middle, have your child make a small dot in the center first and aim both lines through it.
