About these letter M worksheets

These letter M worksheets include uppercase M tracing, lowercase m tracing, a words page with map, mop and moon, and a letter hunt with an answer key. M makes the /m/ sound, a hum made with the lips closed. Children can feel it by touching their lips while they say mmm.

M takes more strokes than most letters. The capital has two tall lines with a V between them that reaches all the way down to the baseline. The lowercase has one short line and two humps, and kindergartners often keep going and add a third. The humps use the same push-up-and-curve move as n and h.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.APrint many upper- and lowercase letters.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.DRecognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

How to use them

  1. Start with the uppercase page. Count the strokes as your child traces: down, slant, slant, down.
  2. On the lowercase page, count humps out loud: “down, hump, hump.” Stop at two.
  3. Trace map, mop and moon. Hum the /m/ at the start of each word before tracing it.
  4. Finish with the letter hunt and use the answer key to check.

Teaching tips for M

  • Uppercase M: start at the top line and pull down straight to the baseline. Lift, go back to the top of that line, slant down to the right to the baseline, slant up to the top line, and pull down straight. Say it while writing: “1. Pull down. Lift. 2. Slant right, slant up, pull down.”
  • Lowercase m: start at the dashed midline and pull down straight to the baseline. Push up, curve forward and pull down straight. Push up again, curve forward and pull down straight. Say it while writing: “Pull down, push up, curve forward, pull down, push up, curve forward, pull down.”
  • Common mix-ups: m with three humps, m and n confused, M and W confused (one is the other upside down), and humps that lean or shrink.
  • Quick activities: draw two mountains side by side and trace them into an M; hum /m/ while your child traces a big m in the air, stopping the hum at the end of each hump.

Questions about letter M

My child keeps adding extra humps to lowercase m. What helps?

Count them. Say “down, one, two” while your child writes, and show that n has one hump and m has two. Writing m between two small dots set the right distance apart can also help.

Why do children mix up M and W?

They are the same shape upside down. The starting stroke helps: M begins with a straight line down, while W begins with a slant. Say the first stroke out loud before writing either one.
