About these letter Q worksheets

These letter Q worksheets cover uppercase Q, lowercase q, the words queen, quilt and quack, and a letter hunt with an answer key. In English, Q is nearly always followed by u, and together qu says /kw/, as in queen.

Capital Q is an O with a short tail across the bottom right, so children who can make O already have most of it. Lowercase q is very different from its capital. It starts with a circle like a, then its line drops straight down below the baseline and kicks up to the right. Because lowercase q is easy to confuse with p and g, those differences are worth teaching directly.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.APrint many upper- and lowercase letters.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.DRecognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

How to use them

  1. On the uppercase page, have your child make the whole O first, lift, and then add the tail.
  2. Before the lowercase page, write a and q side by side. The q is an a whose line keeps going below the baseline, then turns up to the right.
  3. Trace queen, quilt and quack. Point out the u after each q and say /kw/ together.
  4. Finish with the letter hunt and check the answer key.

Teaching tips for Q

  • Uppercase Q: start near the top, just to the right of the middle, and circle back all the way around like O. Lift and make a short slant across the bottom right of the circle. Say it while writing: “1. Circle back all the way around. Lift. 2. Slant right.”
  • Lowercase q: start just below the dashed midline and circle back all the way around. Without lifting, push up to the midline, then pull down straight past the baseline. Near the line below, kick up to the right in a short, pointed flick. Say it while writing: “Circle back, push up, pull down, kick up.” q starts like c, then its tail turns forward.
  • Common mix-ups: q and p (q starts with the circle), q and g (q’s tail turns up to the right; g’s tail curves back to the left), and a capital Q with its tail inside the circle or missing.
  • Quick activities: make a paper crown for a queen and write Qq on it; draw a quilt grid and write a q in each square, starting every circle at the same spot.

Questions about letter Q

Why do Q words have a u after the Q?

That is how English spells the /kw/ sound. Teaching qu as a pair from the start helps with reading and spelling later.

Is capital Q just an O with a tail?

Yes. Lowercase q, though, is shaped completely differently, so children need to learn the two forms separately.

Why is Q so hard to find words for?

Q is one of the least used letters in English, and most of the words kindergartners know that start with it begin with qu: queen, quilt, quack, quiet. Three is plenty for practice.
