About these letter N worksheets
These letter N worksheets practice uppercase N, lowercase n, the words net, nut and nest, and a letter hunt with an answer key. N makes the /n/ sound, which comes out through the nose. Pinch your nose while saying it and the sound stops.
Capital N is one of the letters kindergartners reverse most often, usually by sending the slant up from the bottom left instead of down from the top left. A steady stroke order fixes most of it. Lowercase n is a short line and one hump, the simplest of the hump letters, and a good place to practice the push-up-and-curve move used in h, m and r.

How to use them
- Before the uppercase page, say the stroke order together: “down, lift, slant down, up.” Then trace.
- On the lowercase page, have your child check that the first line starts at the dashed midline, not the top line. If it starts too high, the n turns into an h.
- Trace net, nut and nest, and try the pinched-nose test on each word.
- Do the letter hunt and check with the answer key.
Teaching tips for N
- Uppercase N: start at the top line and pull down straight to the baseline. Lift, go back to the top, slant down to the right to the baseline, then push up straight to the top line. Say it while writing: “1. Pull down. Lift. 2. Slant right, push up.”
- Lowercase n: start at the dashed midline and pull down straight to the baseline. Push up, curve forward over the top and pull down straight to the baseline. Say it while writing: “Pull down, push up, curve forward, pull down.”
- Common mix-ups: a backward N, n and h confused, n and u confused (they are the same shape upside down), and an n with two humps, which makes it an m.
- Quick activities: lay three straws on the table to make N, saying the order as you place them; walk a nut or a button along the strokes of a big N drawn on paper.
Questions about letter N
Why does my child write N backward?
The slant is the part that goes wrong. If your child starts at the bottom or makes the slant first, it’s easy to send it the wrong way. Teach N as a fixed order: down, slant down, up. The slant always goes down to the right.
What’s the difference between n and h?
Height. Lowercase n starts at the dashed midline; h starts at the top line with a tall line. Both have the same hump.
Why do n and u get mixed up?
They are the same shape turned upside down, so a child who isn’t sure where to start can make either one. Say “over the top” for n and “around the bottom” for u, and keep both starting at the dashed midline.
