About these letter J worksheets
These letter J worksheets practice uppercase J, lowercase j, the words jam, jet and jug, and a letter hunt with an answer key. J makes the /j/ sound, as in jump.
J is a hook letter, and the hook always curves back to the left. Kindergartners often write J backward, because the letter gives only one clue about its direction, the curve at the bottom. Lowercase j also drops below the baseline, so it is a natural partner for g, p, q and y.

How to use them
- Start with the uppercase page. Say “down, then hook back” as your child traces each J.
- Before the lowercase page, point to the space below the baseline. The line of lowercase j goes all the way down there before it hooks.
- Trace jam, jet and jug, then jump once for each word as you say it together.
- End with the letter hunt and check it against the answer key.
Teaching tips for J
- Uppercase J: start at the top line and pull down straight. Near the baseline, curve back to the left and stop. Our sheets show J without a bar across the top; if your child’s school adds one, add it. Say it while writing: “Pull down, curve back.”
- Lowercase j: start at the dashed midline and pull down straight, past the baseline, then curve back to the left. Lift and add a small dot above. Say it while writing: “1. Pull down, curve back. Lift. 2. Dot.”
- Fishhook cue: J is a fishhook, and the hook bends back toward the side where we start writing.
- Common mix-ups: a hook that turns right, a lowercase j that stops on the baseline so it looks like an i, and a forgotten dot.
- Quick activities: bend a pipe cleaner into a J and use it to “fish” for paper fish; jump in place each time you hear a /j/ word in a list.
Questions about letter J
Why does my child write J backward?
The hook is the only part that shows which way J faces, and it comes at the end of the letter. Have your child say “hook back” before they start, and practice the hook in the air with a straight arm. Reversals are common in kindergarten and usually settle down with practice.
Does capital J need a line across the top?
It depends on the handwriting style your school uses. Both forms are correct, and our worksheets use the plain hook. What matters most is that your child uses one form consistently.
