About these letter R worksheets

These letter R worksheets include uppercase R and lowercase r tracing, a words page with rug, rat and rain, and a letter hunt with an answer key. R makes the /r/ sound, like the growl of a dog: rrr.

Capital R is a P with a leg, so if your child knows P, R is one stroke away. Lowercase r is short and quick: a line and a small arch that stops right after it starts to curve. The usual problem with r is overdoing it. Keep going and it turns into an n.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.APrint many upper- and lowercase letters.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.DRecognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

How to use them

  1. If your child has learned P, write one first and ask them to add the leg. Then trace the uppercase rows.
  2. On the lowercase page, say “down, up, and a little bit over.” The arch stops before it starts heading down.
  3. Trace rug, rat and rain, growling the /r/ at the start of each word.
  4. Finish with the letter hunt and check it with the answer key.

Teaching tips for R

  • Uppercase R: start at the top line and pull down straight to the baseline. Lift, go back to the top, slide right, curve forward down to the dashed midline, slide left to the line, then slant right down to the baseline. Say it while writing: “1. Pull down. Lift. 2. Slide right, curve forward, slide left, slant right.”
  • Lowercase r: start at the dashed midline and pull down straight to the baseline. Push back up, curve forward over the top, and stop. Say it while writing: “Pull down, push up, curve forward.”
  • Common mix-ups: R and P (missing leg), R and K (the bump drawn as a straight slant), and an r with an arch so long it becomes an n.
  • Quick activities: drive a toy race car along a big R taped on the floor; draw raindrops with crayons and trace an r beside each one.

Questions about letter R

My child’s lowercase r looks like n. What should I say?

Tell them r is a short letter that stops early: line down, back up, and a small curve. Show n beside it so they can see that n’s curve comes all the way back down.

My child says /w/ instead of /r/. Should I be worried?

Many kindergartners are still working on the /r/ sound in speech, and that is common at this age. It doesn’t get in the way of learning to write the letter. Keep modeling the sound in words, and if you have concerns about your child’s speech, ask their teacher.
