About these letter V worksheets
These letter V worksheets include uppercase V and lowercase v tracing, a words page with van, vest and vet, and a letter hunt with an answer key. V makes the /v/ sound: top teeth on the bottom lip, with the voice buzzing. Touch your throat and you can feel it.
V is two slants that meet in a point at the bottom. Uppercase and lowercase v are the same shape in two sizes, which makes V a good letter for practicing slants before harder ones like W, X and Y. The thing to watch is the bottom point: if it rounds off, the letter starts to look like u.

How to use them
- On the uppercase page, say “slant down, slant up” and keep the pencil on the paper at the bottom point.
- On the lowercase page, check that each v starts at the dashed midline and touches the baseline in a sharp point.
- Trace van, vest and vet. Have your child feel the buzz of /v/ on their throat and compare it with /f/, which has no buzz.
- Finish with the letter hunt and the answer key.
Teaching tips for V
- Uppercase V: start at the top line on the left. Slant down to the right to the baseline, then slant up to the right to the top line. Say it while writing: “Slant right, slant up.”
- Lowercase v: the same two slants, starting at the dashed midline and touching the baseline. Say it while writing: “Slant right, slant up.”
- Common mix-ups: v and u (a rounded bottom), v and y (y has a tail), and slants that don’t meet at the bottom.
- Quick activities: hold up two fingers in a V and trace between them; drive a toy van down one slant and up the other on a big V taped to the floor.
Questions about letter V
Why do V and v look the same?
Some letters keep their shape in both cases and only change size: c, o, s, v, w, x and z. For these, size is the thing to check. Uppercase fills the space from the top line to the baseline; lowercase starts at the dashed midline.
My child’s v is round at the bottom. Does that matter?
Yes, because a round v reads as u. Ask your child to stop for a moment at the bottom, then change direction. That brief pause makes a sharp point.
