About these 1st grade worksheets

First grade is the year children become readers. They blend and spell longer words, read short stories on their own, write their own sentences, add and subtract within 20 and start working with tens and ones. These free worksheets for 1st graders cover the whole year, with clear pages made for six- and seven-year-olds.

Math covers addition and subtraction facts, fact families, word problems, counting to 120, place value, telling time, money, measurement, graphs and shapes, with several versions of most sheets so there is always a fresh page to practice. Literacy covers phonics patterns, 30 weekly spelling lists, sight words, reading comprehension passages, writing prompts and grammar. Science and social studies cover light and sound, animal and plant parts, the sun and moon, maps, continents and oceans, and being a good citizen.

Pages with one right answer have an answer key, and every topic page lists the skills and standards it practices. Every PDF comes in US Letter and A4 and prints in black and white.

Questions

What should a child know by the end of 1st grade?

Most first graders finish the year able to read short books on their own, spell common words, write a few sentences about a topic, add and subtract within 20, count to 120, understand tens and ones, tell time to the hour and half hour and describe shapes.

How many worksheets should a 1st grader do?

One or two pages a day is plenty. Short, regular practice works better than long sessions, and pairing a worksheet with reading together and real objects for math helps the skill stick.

Are there answer keys?

Yes. Every page with one right answer has an answer key on its last page, so you can check work quickly.

Can I print these for my whole class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you need for your class or family. Every PDF comes in US Letter and A4.
