About these letter H worksheets

These letter H worksheets are a good confidence builder. Your child traces uppercase H and lowercase h, traces the words hat, hen and hand, and hunts for every H and h on a page with an answer key. H says /h/, a quiet puff of air with no voice behind it.

Uppercase H uses only straight lines, which makes it one of the easier capitals to form. Lowercase h asks for something new: a tall line, then a push back up and a hump. That same push-up-and-curve move shows up again in n, m and r, so time spent on h pays off later.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.APrint many upper- and lowercase letters.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.DRecognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

How to use them

  1. Start with the uppercase page. Remind your child to make both tall lines first, then the bridge across the middle.
  2. On the lowercase page, check the first line of each h. It needs to start at the top line; if it starts at the midline, the letter becomes an n.
  3. Before tracing hat, hen and hand, hold your child’s hand in front of their mouth so they can feel the puff of air on /h/. Then trace the words.
  4. Finish with the letter hunt and check with the answer key.

Teaching tips for H

  • Uppercase H: start at the top line and pull down straight. Lift, move over to the right, and pull down straight again. Lift and slide right along the dashed midline to join them. Say it while writing: “1. Pull down. Lift. 2. Pull down. Lift. 3. Slide right.”
  • Lowercase h: start at the top line and pull down straight to the baseline. Push back up, curve forward over the top at the dashed midline, and pull down straight to the baseline. Say it while writing: “Pull down, push up, curve forward, pull down.”
  • Chair cue: lowercase h looks like a chair facing right, and the tall back comes first.
  • Common mix-ups: h and n (the first line is too short), a hump that starts at the bottom instead of rising from the line, and an H whose crossbar sits near the top.
  • Quick activities: tape a big H on the floor and have your child hop along each line in the right order; draw a tall line in shaving cream, then add the hump to make an h.

Questions about letter H

How do I stop my child’s h from looking like n?

Check the start. The tall line of h starts at the top line; n starts at the dashed midline. Have your child put a finger on the top line before every h.

Why doesn’t the name of H sound like /h/?

The letter name, aitch, has no /h/ sound in it, so H is harder to connect to its sound than letters like M or S, whose names include their sounds. Teach the sound directly with the puff of air and words like hat and hen.
