About these letter Z worksheets

These letter Z worksheets include uppercase Z and lowercase z tracing, a words page for zoo, zip and zebra, and a letter hunt with an answer key. Z makes the /z/ sound, a buzz like a bee. Unlike /s/, you can feel it buzz in your throat.

Z is one continuous zigzag: across, slant back, across. Uppercase and lowercase z are the same shape in two sizes. The slant is the tricky part. It has to run from the top right down to the bottom left, and children often send it the other way, which makes a backward Z.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.APrint many upper- and lowercase letters.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.DRecognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

How to use them

  1. Before the uppercase page, draw a Z in the air together and say “across, slant back, across.”
  2. Trace the uppercase rows without lifting the pencil.
  3. On the lowercase page, check that each z starts on the dashed midline and finishes on the baseline.
  4. Trace zoo, zip and zebra, buzzing the /z/, then finish with the letter hunt and its answer key.

Teaching tips for Z

  • Uppercase Z: start at the top line on the left. Slide right along the top line, slant down to the left to the baseline, and slide right along the baseline. Say it while writing: “Slide right, slant left, slide right.”
  • Lowercase z: the same path, starting on the dashed midline. Say it while writing: “Slide right, slant left, slide right.”
  • Common mix-ups: a backward Z, Z and 2 confused (2 has a curve at the top), Z and N confused (one is the other turned on its side), and a slant that misses the corners.
  • Quick activities: zip a jacket up and down while buzzing /zzz/; draw zigzag zebra stripes and trace a z on each one.

Questions about letter Z

Why does my child write Z backward?

The slant has to go back toward where the letter started. Saying “slant back” reminds children to go down and to the left. It is a common reversal and usually fades with practice.

What’s the difference between Z and 2?

The top. Z starts with a straight line across; 2 starts with a curve. Practicing them side by side helps once your child can write both.
