About these halloween for preschool worksheets

These Halloween activities for preschool are friendly and simple: big smiling ghosts, pumpkins, bats, a cat and candy, one job per page and a short direction for the grown-up. Children color a friendly ghost, count treats and circle the number, trace paths from a bat to the moon, find and count pictures in I spy, spot the big one, finish patterns and find the one that is different.

For hands-on fun there is a count and glue page (with a no-cut twin) and a ghost playdough mat. All pages are black and white, print on US Letter or A4, and pages with one right answer have an answer key on page 2. For kindergarten and 1st grade pages, see Halloween Worksheets.

Standards

  • ELOF P-MATH 2Child recognizes the number of objects in a small set.
  • ELOF P-MATH 3Child understands the relationship between numbers and quantities.
  • ELOF P-MATH 7Child understands simple patterns.
  • ELOF P-MATH 8Child measures objects by their various attributes using standard and non-standard measurement. Uses differences in attributes to make comparisons.

  • ELOF P-SCI 3Child compares and categorizes observable phenomena.

How to use them

  1. Do one page at a time, and talk about the pictures first: "Here is a friendly ghost. Here is a pumpkin."
  2. Use wrapped candy, plastic spiders or mini pumpkins as counters on the counting pages.
  3. Slide the tracing and playdough pages into a sheet protector to reuse with a dry-erase marker or dough.
  4. Use the no-cut count and match page when scissors are not out.

Teaching tips

  • Most 3 and 4 year olds count to 5 with a finger on each picture. Touch and say each one together.
  • On the tracing page, the big dot shows where to start and the arrow shows which way to go.
  • If a child does not want to color a ghost, any picture is fine. The skill is the coloring, not the Halloween.
  • Short and happy beats long. One page with lots of talk is plenty.

Questions teachers and parents ask

Are these Halloween activities right for 3 year olds?

Yes, with help. Each page has one job and big pictures. Three year olds may need a grown-up to point and count along; older preschoolers can do most pages on their own.

Are any pictures scary?

No. The ghost and bats smile, and there are no skeletons or monsters.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Every page with one right answer has an answer key on page 2 of the same PDF. Coloring, tracing, playdough and writing pages do not need one.

Do I need scissors?

Only for the count and glue page, and it has a no-cut twin where children draw lines instead.
