About these st. patrick's day worksheets
These St. Patrick's Day worksheets use shamrocks, rainbows and pots of gold coins to practice real skills. Preschoolers color a big shamrock, trace the rainbow, count gold coins, sort big and small shamrocks and follow a road to the pot of gold. Kindergartners count coins in ten frames, add with pictures, color by sight word, read color words to color a rainbow and hear a short nonfiction read-aloud about how rainbows form. 1st graders subtract within 20, solve story problems, read a passage about rainbows, graph St. Patrick's Day pictures and fill in a March calendar.
St. Patrick's Day is March 17. Use these pages in the week before, or any time in March when you want a rainbow or shamrock theme. The rainbow pages also pair well with a light and weather lesson; see the Weather page for more.
Every page is black and white, prints on US Letter or A4, and pages with one right answer have an answer key on page 2.

Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
How to use them
- Start with the rainbow pages. Name the colors in order, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, then color together.
- Use real or play coins as counters for the counting and subtraction pages.
- For the shamrock sort, the cut and paste page and the draw-a-line page practice the same skill, so pick whichever suits your class.
- On the 1st grade March calendar, fill in the dates together, then mark March 17 and talk about how many days are left.
Teaching tips
- A shamrock has three leaves. Count them together on the coloring and playdough pages.
- On the color word rainbow, have children read each word aloud before they pick up a crayon.
- In the subtraction story problems, a quick drawing of coins with some crossed out helps children see what is left.
- Green crayons run out fast this week. Have a few spares ready.
