About these christmas for 2nd grade worksheets

These Christmas worksheets for 2nd graders keep December practice real. Children solve one- and two-step Christmas word problems within 100, add and subtract 2-digit numbers with regrouping, and count change at a holiday shop.

They read an original story about a paper chain countdown and a nonfiction text about why evergreens stay green, then answer questions with a key. Writing pages ask for an opinion about the best part of the holidays and the steps for wrapping a gift. A word search, irregular plurals (elves, reindeer, gingerbread men) and a favorite winter treat bar graph round out the set.

The pages are secular: trees, gifts, cookies, snow and family. Every page with one right answer has an answer key, with sample answers for written questions.

How to use them

  1. Use the word problems in small groups: read, draw a bar model, write the number sentence.
  2. Read the paper chain story together, then talk about how Lena handled the snowstorm before children answer on their own.
  3. Run a class vote on favorite treats before the bar graph page, then compare your class data with the sheet.

Teaching tips

  • On the regrouping pages, have children say "Do I need to regroup?" before they start each problem.
  • Not every family celebrates Christmas. The winter, snowman and gingerbread man pages make good choices for children who don't.
