About these decodable readers worksheets

A decodable reader is a little book a child can read by sounding out, because it only uses letter sounds they have been taught plus a few sight words. That is the point: every success comes from decoding, not from guessing at a picture.

These decodable readers follow the usual kindergarten order. There is one stage for each short vowel (a, e, i, o, u), then a mixed CVC stage with all five, then the digraphs sh, ch and th. Each stage has a foldable eight-page decodable book and a one-page decodable passage with a word warm-up.

We checked every word. Each one is either one of our 50 kindergarten sight words or a short word built only from the sounds of that stage: the short a book uses only short a words like cat, nap and mad. There are no blends, no double letters and no ck words until a child is ready for them. All the stories are original.

How to use them

  1. Pick the stage your child is working on. If they know all their short a sounds, start with the short a book and passage.
  2. To make a decodable book, print one page, fold it in half the long way, then into eighths. Unfold, cut along the solid line in the middle, refold and push the ends together to make an eight-page book.
  3. Before reading, go over the words on the back page (or the warm-up box on the passage): sound out the words, then read the sight words together.
  4. Have your child point under each word as they read. If they get stuck, say "Sound it out" rather than giving the word.
  5. Read each book or passage at least three times over a few days. The second and third reads build smooth, fluent reading.
  6. Let your child color the pictures and take the book home to read to someone else.

Teaching tips

  • If a child guesses from the picture, cover the picture, have them sound out the word, then uncover it to check.
  • Short e and short i are the vowels most often mixed up. Do those two stages slowly, and come back to them after the mixed stage.
  • For sh, ch and th, remind your child that the two letters make one sound. Point to the pair with one finger.
  • Names in the stories (Sam, Meg, Tim, Bob, Gus) follow the same sounds as the stage, so they can be sounded out too.
  • The "I read it" circles on the passages are a simple tracker: color one each time your child reads the story.
  • If a stage is too easy, move on. If it is too hard, go back one stage, not two.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What are decodable readers?

Decodable readers are books and passages written so that almost every word follows phonics patterns a child has already learned. The few other words are common sight words. Children can read them by sounding out instead of guessing.

What is the difference between decodable books and leveled readers?

Leveled readers use natural language and lean on pictures and patterns, so children often guess. Decodable books limit the words to taught sounds, so children practice actual decoding.

What order should we use?

Short a, then short e, i, o and u, then mixed CVC, then sh, ch and th. That follows the order most kindergarten phonics programs teach the sounds.

Which sight words are used?

Only words from our list of 50 kindergarten sight words, such as the, is, a, can, see, said and have. Each book lists its sight words on the back page.

How do I fold the mini books?

Fold the page in half the long way, then into eighths. Unfold it, cut the solid line in the middle, fold it the long way again and push the ends together. Then fold the pages around into a book.

Are these decodable passages free?

Yes. Every book and passage is a free PDF in US Letter and A4, with no account or email sign-up.
