About these halloween for 2nd graders worksheets

These Halloween worksheets for 2nd graders practice real grade skills with a friendly theme. In math, children solve one- and two-step word problems within 100, subtract with regrouping, break three-digit numbers into hundreds, tens and ones, and make a bar graph of class costumes. In reading, they read an original story about a costume mix-up and a nonfiction text about spiders and their webs.

For writing there is a make-believe story about a shy little ghost and a how-to page for making a jack-o'-lantern. Grammar pages cover adverbs and irregular plural nouns, and there is a Halloween word search. Nothing is scary. All pages are black and white, print on US Letter or A4, and pages with one right answer have an answer key at the end of the PDF. For preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade pages, see Halloween Worksheets.

How to use them

  1. Use a math page and a reading or writing page each day in the last week of October.
  2. Make the costume bar graph with your own class tally first, then use the page as a check.
  3. Read the spider text before a nature walk and look for webs together.
  4. Use the ghost story prompt as a writing center, with the plan boxes done first.

Teaching tips

  • On adverbs, have children ask "how did it happen?" The answer word is usually the adverb.
  • For irregular plurals, read each choice out loud. Children often hear which one sounds right.
  • If a child mixes up hundreds and tens, have them point to each digit and say its place name.
  • The fall and pumpkin pages practice the same skills for families who do not celebrate Halloween.
