About these kindergarten writing paper worksheets

This kindergarten writing paper has the three-line ruling young writers need: a solid top line, a dashed middle line and a darker baseline, with space below each row for letters like g, p and y. Choose 1 inch lines for beginning writers, 3/4 inch lines for most of kindergarten, and 5/8 inch lines (often called primary writing paper) for children who are ready for a smaller size.

Draw and write paper adds a big picture box above the lines for journals and stories. A landscape page is included for wide pictures and longer lines. Every page has a Name and Date line and prints on US Letter or A4.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.APrint many upper- and lowercase letters.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.3Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened.

How to use them

  1. Start with 1 inch lines. Move to 3/4 inch when your child's letters fit easily between the top line and the baseline.
  2. Show where letters sit: tall letters touch the top line, small letters touch the dashed line, and letters like g and y hang below the baseline.
  3. Use draw and write paper for journals: draw first, then write a sentence about the picture.
  4. Print a stack to keep by your writing center or in a homework folder.

Teaching tips

  • If letters float above the line, trace the baseline with a highlighter so it is easy to see.
  • Children who press very hard or write very large usually need the bigger 1 inch lines for a while longer.
  • The 5/8 inch lines suit most first graders; only move a kindergartner to them once their letters are steady at 3/4 inch.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What size lines do kindergartners use?

Most kindergarten paper has 3/4 inch to 1 inch from the top line to the baseline, with a dashed line in the middle. Beginning writers often start with the larger size.

What is primary writing paper?

Primary writing paper has a solid top line, a dashed middle line and a baseline for each row, so children can see how tall each letter should be. It comes in sizes from about 1 inch for kindergarten down to 5/8 inch or 1/2 inch for older children.

Can I print this on A4 paper?

Yes. Every page comes as a US Letter PDF and an A4 PDF with the same line sizes.
