About these letter I worksheets

These letter I worksheets for preschool give a 3 to 5 year old one simple job per page: color a big I and i, trace them, dab them with a dot marker, find them among a few other letters, listen for the I sound, cut and glue, and build the letter with playdough. Every page is big and uncluttered, with one short direction for the grown-up to read aloud.

I is a vowel. These pages use its short sound, /ĭ/, the sound at the start of inchworm and iguana. Every picture is one young children name the same way every time, so the sound is easy to hear.

To write uppercase I: Pull down. Lift. Slide right at the top. Lift. Slide right at the bottom. To write lowercase i: pull down, then lift and add the dot. The tracing page uses the same letter shapes as our kindergarten pages, drawn much bigger, so nothing has to be relearned later.

Standards

  • ELOF P-LIT 3Child identifies letters of the alphabet and produces correct sounds associated with letters.
  • ELOF P-LIT 1Child demonstrates awareness that spoken language is composed of smaller segments of sound.
  • ELOF P-LIT 6Child writes for a variety of purposes using increasingly sophisticated marks.
  • ELOF P-PMP 3Child demonstrates increasing control, strength, and coordination of small muscles.

How to use them

  1. Start with the coloring page. Say "I is for inchworm" and name each picture together before your child colors.
  2. Use the dot marker and playdough pages to feel the shape of I. Start at the black dot each time, the same place the pencil starts.
  3. On the tracing page, trace the solid I with a finger first, then trace the dotted letters with a crayon or pencil. The box at the bottom is for one try alone.
  4. Finish with the sound pages. Say each picture's name slowly, stretching the first sound, then color or cut out the ones that match.

Teaching tips for I

  • Say it while you trace: uppercase I, "Pull down. Lift. Slide right at the top. Lift. Slide right at the bottom." Lowercase i, "Pull down, then lift and add the dot."
  • Children often forget the dot. Make the dot the last, special step.
  • Go on a letter I hunt around the house or classroom: look for I on cereal boxes, signs and book covers, and for things that start with the I sound.
  • Little hands tire fast. One or two pages a day is plenty, and it is fine to stop halfway.

Questions about letter I

What pictures start with I for preschool?

Inchworm and iguana both start with the I sound /ĭ/. These are the pictures on the coloring and sound pages.

Do I need a dot marker?

No. A dot marker is the most fun, but round stickers, a crayon dab, a cotton swab dipped in paint or a cereal piece in each circle all work.

Which pages have an answer key?

The find the letter, sound and cut and glue pages each have an answer key on page 2. Coloring, tracing, dot marker and playdough pages have no wrong answer, so they need no key.
