About these number 7 worksheets

These number 7 worksheets for preschool give a three, four or five year old six simple ways to meet the number seven. Each page has one job and one short line for the grown-up to read aloud, so a child who cannot read yet can still do it.

Your child traces a big 7 that is one and a half inches tall, colors 7 ladybugs from a larger group, dots the 7 with a dot marker, finds every 7 among the balloons, circles the group of 7 and builds a 7 from playdough. Together they connect the written 7, the word seven and the amount 7.

Every page prints in black and white on US Letter or A4. The find and circle pages have an answer key on page 2.

Standards

  • ELOF P-MATH 2Child recognizes the number of objects in a small set.
  • ELOF P-MATH 3Child understands the relationship between numbers and quantities.
  • ELOF P-MATH 5Child associates a quantity with written numerals up to 5 and begins to write numbers.
  • ELOF P-PMP 3Child demonstrates increasing control, strength, and coordination of small muscles.

How to use them

  1. Start with the playdough mat or the dot marker page. Building and dotting a 7 is easier than tracing it, and both build hand strength.
  2. On the tracing page, trace the solid 7 at the top with a finger first while you say the cue: Slide right, slant left.
  3. Count out loud together on Color 7 Ladybugs. Touch each picture as you color it, and stop at 7.
  4. Use Find the Number 7 and Circle the Group of 7 last, once your child knows what a 7 looks like.
  5. Slip the playdough mat into a sheet protector so it can be used again and again.

Teaching tips

  • 7 is a straight slide across the top and a slant down to the left. It is one of the numbers children flip most, so say “slide right, then slant” each time.
  • Hold the page still with the helping hand, and use short, chunky crayons: small pieces of crayon encourage a better grip than long ones.
  • When your child counts, ask “So how many are there?” at the end. Saying “seven!” again shows they know the last number tells how many.
  • Count seven days in a week on a calendar together.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How do you teach the number 7 to a preschooler?

Mix seeing, counting and making. Show the written 7, count 7 real objects together, and let your child build a 7 from playdough or dot it with a marker before tracing it with a crayon.

How should my child write the number 7?

Start at the top. Slide right, slant left. The model on the tracing page shows the same steps with numbered arrows.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Find the Number 7 and Circle the Group of 7 have an answer key on page 2. The tracing, coloring, dot marker and playdough pages have no single right answer.
