About these plants worksheets

Planting a seed and watching it grow is one of the best science activities for preschoolers. These plant worksheets for preschool go with that hands-on work: the parts of a plant, what a plant needs to grow, and how a seed sprouts and grows into a plant with flowers.

The pages use one real-looking bean plant throughout, drawn with its roots in the soil, so children see the same plant at every step. Children point and name, color, circle and cut and glue. A grown-up reads the short direction at the top, and pages with right answers have an answer key on page 2.

Standards

  • ELOF P-SCI 1Child observes and describes observable phenomena (objects, materials, organisms, and events).
  • ELOF P-SCI 3Child compares and categorizes observable phenomena.
  • ELOF P-SCI 4Child asks a question, gathers information, and makes predictions.
  • ELOF P-PMP 3Child demonstrates increasing control, strength, and coordination of small muscles.

How to use them

  1. Plant a bean seed in a clear cup with a wet paper towel so your child can watch the root grow down and the shoot grow up.
  2. Use the Parts of a Plant poster to name the flower, leaf, stem and roots, then find them on a real plant.
  3. Before the what plants need pages, ask, "What would happen if our plant had no water or no sun?"
  4. Use How a Seed Grows alongside your real seed, then do the seed to plant pages a week or two later.
  5. On Foods From Plants, bring in an apple, a carrot or some corn and talk about the part of the plant we eat.

Teaching tips

  • Plants need sunlight, water, air and room to grow. Most plants grow in soil, which holds them up and gives them what they need.
  • Roots grow down and the shoot grows up, even if the seed is planted upside down.
  • Real bean flowers can be white, purple or red. The coloring page asks for red, like a scarlet runner bean.
  • Keep the language simple. Words like seed, sprout, roots, stem, leaf and flower are plenty for preschool.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What are the parts of a plant for preschool?

Roots, stem, leaves and flower. Roots take in water from the soil, the stem holds the plant up, leaves use sunlight to make food, and flowers make seeds.

What do plants need to grow?

Plants need sunlight, water and air, and most plants grow in soil. These pages focus on sun, water and soil, the needs preschoolers can see and give a plant themselves.

Do these plant worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. The what plants need, seed to plant and foods from plants pages have an answer key on page 2. The posters and coloring page do not need one.
