About these position words worksheets

Position words tell where something is: in the box, on the table, under the table, next to the box, over the house. Preschoolers use these words to follow directions, tidy up and talk about what they see. They are also an early part of math, because they describe where things are in space.

These position words worksheets start with a chart that shows a cat in, on, under and next to, and a bird over a house. On the circle pages, a grown-up reads the word and children circle the picture that shows it. On the find and color pages, children color only the animals under the table or the toys on the box.

The cut and paste page has four bears to glue in the box, on the table, under the table and next to the box. The draw it page asks for a ball in the same four places, with no cutting. Pages with one right answer have an answer key on page 2.

Standards

  • ELOF P-MATH 10Child explores the positions of objects in space.
  • ELOF P-LC 6Child understands and uses a wide variety of words for a variety of purposes.

How to use them

  1. Act out the words first: put a teddy bear in, on, under and next to a box.
  2. Play a follow the direction game: "Put the block under your chair."
  3. Hang the chart and point to each picture as you say the word.
  4. Read each word on the page aloud. Children work from the pictures.
  5. Use the cut and paste page for scissor practice and the draw it page when scissors are not out.

Teaching tips

  • In and on are learned first, then under, then next to and over.
  • Use the full phrase: "The cat is under the table," not just "under."
  • If a child mixes up on and over, explain that on is touching and over is up above.
  • On the draw it page, a ball is just a circle. Any circle in the right place is a great answer.
