The four seasons

A poster of one tree in all four seasons and a page to match each season to something that goes with it.

Seasons in order

Glue the seasons in a circle after spring, or circle the season that comes next.

Summer or winter?

Sort things we do and wear into summer and winter, then draw yourself in your favorite season.

About these seasons worksheets

Spring, summer, fall and winter come around in the same order every year. These seasons worksheets for preschool follow one tree through the year, so children can see how it changes: new flowers in spring, green leaves in summer, colored leaves falling in fall and bare branches in winter.

Children match each season to something they see in it, put the seasons in order, and sort summer and winter things. Each page has big pictures and one short direction for a grown-up to read. Pages with right answers have an answer key on page 2, and each cut and paste page has a no-cut version.

Standards

  • ELOF P-SCI 1Child observes and describes observable phenomena (objects, materials, organisms, and events).
  • ELOF P-SCI 3Child compares and categorizes observable phenomena.

  • ELOF P-PMP 3Child demonstrates increasing control, strength, and coordination of small muscles.

How to use them

  1. Start with the Four Seasons poster. Talk about the season you are in now and what the trees outside look like.
  2. Use the matching page to talk about what people and plants do in each season.
  3. For Seasons in Order, spring is already in place. Your child glues summer, fall and winter around the circle, then follows the arrows back to spring.
  4. Pick a tree near your home or school and visit it each season. Compare it with the tree on the pages.
  5. Finish with My Favorite Season. Ask your child to tell you about the drawing and write down their words.

Teaching tips

  • Say the order out loud often: spring, summer, fall, winter, then spring again.
  • The seasons in these pages are the ones most of the United States sees. In warm places, talk about how some trees keep their leaves all year.
  • Some people say autumn for fall. Both words are right.
  • A preschooler does not need to know why the seasons change yet. Noticing how they look and feel is the goal.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What are the four seasons in order?

Spring, summer, fall and winter. After winter, spring comes again, so the seasons go around in a circle every year.

How do you teach seasons to preschoolers?

Watch one tree all year, talk about the weather and what you wear, and read books about each season. Matching and ordering pages help children remember the order.

Do these seasons worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. The matching, ordering and summer or winter pages have an answer key on page 2. The poster and the drawing page have no wrong answers.
