About these sight word books worksheets

Little books are where sight words start to feel like real reading. Each of these printable sight word books is a tiny story with a picture on every page and a simple pattern a child can follow, like I see a cat. I see a dog. The pattern holds the story together, and the picture gives the one new word on each page.

Every book prints on one sheet of paper and folds into an 8-page mini book with a single cut. Page 1 is the cover, with a line for the child to write their name. Pages 2 to 7 tell the story, and the back page lists the book’s sight words with a box to check for each one the child can read.

The ten readers cover sight words from I, see and like to what, where and that, including number words and color words. The blank book has a box to draw in and a line to write on for every page, so children can make their own sight word book.

How to use them

  1. Print the page in landscape, with the page scaling set to 100% or actual size.
  2. Fold the sheet in half the long way with the pictures on the outside, so the upside-down pages end up on the back.
  3. Open it, fold it in half the short way, then fold both ends back to the middle to make eight boxes. Open it again.
  4. Fold it in half the short way once more and cut along the solid line with the scissors, from the fold to the next crease. That cut is only the middle of the long line.
  5. Open the sheet, fold it the long way again, and push the two ends toward the middle so the cut opens up. Fold the pages around into a book with the cover on the front.
  6. Read the book together first, pointing to each word. Then let your child read it to you, color the pictures and check off the words on the back.

Teaching tips

  • Fold one book in front of your child, then let them fold their own. Kindergartners can do every fold but the cut, which works best with an adult.
  • Point under each word as you read. One word, one point helps children match spoken words to written words.
  • Before reading, look at the pictures and say what each one is. The picture names in the books are words like cat, bus and tree.
  • Keep the finished books in a book bag or basket and reread them often. Rereading a familiar book is how sight words become automatic.
  • For the blank book, write a frame like I see a ___ on the first page and let your child finish each page with a word and a picture.
  • If a page has two sentences, read them as two parts: the question, then the answer.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How do I fold a sight word mini book?

Fold the sheet in half the long way, then into eight boxes. Cut the middle of the long fold along the solid line, refold the long way, push the ends together so the cut opens, and fold the pages into a book.

Do I need a stapler?

No. Each book is one sheet with one cut, and it holds together without staples or glue.

Which sight words are in the books?

The books use words such as I, see, a, like, the, we, go, look, at, me, can, this, is, my, where, here, big, little, one, two, three, red, blue, yellow, green, what and that. The back of each book lists its words.

Will it print right on A4 paper?

Yes. Each book has a US Letter and an A4 PDF. Print at 100% or actual size so the fold lines stay in the middle of the page.

Are these sight word books free?

Yes. Every book is a free PDF to print at home or school, with no account or email sign-up.
