About these thanksgiving for 2nd graders worksheets

These Thanksgiving worksheets for 2nd graders practice real grade skills with a harvest theme. In math, children solve one- and two-step word problems within 100, add and subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping and read a bar graph of favorite Thanksgiving foods. In reading, they read an original story about a lumpy pumpkin pie and a nonfiction text about wild turkeys, then answer questions.

For writing there is an "I am thankful" opinion paragraph and a how-to page about setting the table, each with a planning row and a checklist. Grammar pages cover collective nouns and capital letters for holidays and places, and there is a Thanksgiving word search. All pages are black and white, print on US Letter or A4, and pages with one right answer have an answer key at the end of the PDF. For preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade pages, see Thanksgiving Worksheets.

How to use them

  1. Use a math page and a reading or writing page each day in the week before Thanksgiving break.
  2. On word problems, have children draw a bar model in the box, then write the number sentence.
  3. Read the turkey text together first, then let children reread it on their own to answer the questions.
  4. Send the "I am thankful" paragraph home as a card for the family dinner.

Teaching tips

  • If a child forgets to regroup, have them say the ones first: "7 ones take away 9 ones. I need a ten."
  • On two-step problems, ask children to circle what step 1 finds before they start step 2.
  • For the opinion paragraph, check for an opinion, two reasons and a closing sentence before spelling.
  • Pumpkin and fall pages practice the same skills for families who do not celebrate Thanksgiving.
