Mitten match and dot the partner

The mitten match comes as cut and paste and as draw a line, with the same letters.

About these uppercase and lowercase letters worksheets

These uppercase and lowercase letter worksheets for preschool help children see that every letter has two forms that go together. The letters are big, there are only four to six pairs on a page, and each page asks for just one thing.

Five draw-a-line pages cover the alphabet from A to Z in order, so you can work through it a few letters at a time. The mitten match pairs letters whose two forms look different, like B and b or G and g, and comes as a cut and paste page and a draw-a-line page with the same mittens. The dot marker page asks children to find the right lowercase partner among three.

Every page has an answer key on page 2.

Standards

  • ELOF P-LIT 3Child identifies letters of the alphabet and produces correct sounds associated with letters.
  • ELOF P-PMP 3Child demonstrates increasing control, strength, and coordination of small muscles.

How to use them

  1. Start with the A to E page and say each pair out loud: "Big A, little a."
  2. Let your child point to both letters before drawing the line.
  3. Use the mitten match as a winter activity, or hang the finished mittens on a string as a class line.
  4. Come back to a page a week later. Matching it faster is a great sign.

Teaching tips

  • Pairs that look alike, such as C and c, O and o, S and s, are the easiest. Start there to build confidence.
  • Pairs that look different, such as A and a, B and b, G and g, need more practice. The mitten match focuses on those.
  • If b and d get mixed up, say: "Uppercase B and lowercase b both start with a tall line."
  • Many preschoolers call uppercase "big letters" and lowercase "small letters". That is fine to start with.
