About these weather worksheets

Weather is something preschoolers can see and feel every day. Is it sunny or cloudy? Is it raining, snowing or windy? Is it hot or cold? These weather worksheets for preschool help young children notice the weather and talk about it, and connect it to what they wear and do.

Every page has big, clear weather pictures and one simple job: dot today's weather, draw a line to match, circle or cut and glue clothes for hot or cold days, trace falling rain, or color a rainbow in order. A grown-up reads the short direction at the top. Matching and sorting pages include an answer key on page 2.

Standards

  • ELOF P-SCI 1Child observes and describes observable phenomena (objects, materials, organisms, and events).
  • ELOF P-SCI 3Child compares and categorizes observable phenomena.
  • ELOF P-LC 6Child understands and uses a wide variety of words for a variety of purposes.

How to use them

  1. Hang the Kinds of Weather poster near the door or your calendar and look out the window together each morning.
  2. Use Today's Weather as a daily check-in. Dot the weather you see, then step outside to feel if it is hot or cold.
  3. For the clothes pages, bring in a real sun hat, mittens or a coat and ask, "When would you wear this?"
  4. Trace the Rain is good pre-writing practice. Start each line at the dot and pull down, the way rain falls.
  5. Color the rainbow after a rainy day, or make one with a glass of water and sunlight.

Teaching tips

  • Keep weather words simple: sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy, windy and stormy. Add hot and cold for temperature.
  • Windy days are easy to spot by watching trees, flags and kites move.
  • A rainbow's colors are always in the same order, with red on the outside and purple on the inside.
  • If you live where it does not snow, talk about where snow falls and look at pictures of snowy places.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What weather should preschoolers learn?

Start with sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy and windy, then add stormy. Talk about hot and cold too, and what we wear for each kind of weather.

How can I teach weather to preschoolers?

Look outside together at the same time each day and name the weather. Feel the air, watch the trees for wind and dress for the day. A daily weather page makes it a routine.

Do these weather worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. The weather match and the hot or cold pages have an answer key on page 2. The poster, today's weather, tracing and coloring pages do not need one.
