About these wh questions worksheets

WH questions (who, what, where, when and why) are the questions we ask most about stories. Each word asks for a different kind of answer: who asks about a person or an animal, what asks about a thing, where asks about a place, and when asks about a time. Children who know the difference answer questions about stories more accurately.

These WH questions worksheets start with pictures. On the picture scene pages, children look at a scene, like a park, a snow day or a farm, and circle the answer to each question. On the story pages, an adult reads a short, original story aloud and children circle picture answers, so no reading is needed.

The question word sort and which question word pages teach what each word is asking for, and the question words chart gives a simple picture for each word to keep on the wall. A blank page lets children answer who, what, where and when about any book. Pages with one right answer have an answer key on page 2.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.2Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.7With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.10Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.

How to use them

  1. Start with the question words chart. Read each word, point to its picture and give an example from your day: "Who is at the door? Where are your shoes?"
  2. Use the picture scene pages next. Talk about the whole picture first, then read each question and let your child circle the answer.
  3. On the story pages, read the story aloud twice before asking the questions. Read each question slowly and stress the question word.
  4. Use the sort and which question word pages to check that your child knows what each word is asking for.
  5. After any read-aloud book, use the WH questions for any book page to draw or write the answers.
  6. Keep it oral too. Ask one who, what, where or when question about every book you read together.

Teaching tips

  • Each question word has the same small picture on every page: a person for who, a box for what, a map pin for where and a clock for when. Point to the picture as you read the question.
  • Who and what are easiest. Where comes next. When and why take the most practice, so expect more help there.
  • If your child gives a who answer to a where question, repeat the question word and point to its picture: "Where. Where asks about a place."
  • Short captions under some pictures are for the adult to read aloud.
  • Let your child ask you the questions, too. Asking questions is as important as answering them.
  • Use the scenes again later by asking new questions about them.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What are WH questions?

WH questions are questions that start with who, what, where, when or why. Each one asks for a different kind of answer: a person, a thing, a place, a time or a reason.

Which WH questions should kindergarteners learn first?

Most children learn who and what first, then where. When and why usually take longer, so practice them with lots of pictures and examples.

Can children who are not reading yet use these worksheets?

Yes. An adult reads the stories and questions aloud, and children answer by circling pictures.

Are the stories and pictures original?

Yes. The stories were written for this site, and the pictures are simple black-and-white drawings that print well.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Every page with one right answer has an answer key on page 2 of the PDF.
