About these collective nouns worksheets

A collective noun is one word that names a group: a team of players, a flock of birds, a bunch of grapes. Second graders learn the common ones they meet in books and everyday talk and use them in their own sentences.

These collective nouns worksheets begin with a printable chart of common collective nouns for people, animals and things. Practice pages ask children to fill in the blank from a word bank, choose the collective noun that fits a sentence, match each group picture to its collective noun (with lines or cut and paste), sort collective nouns into people, animals and things, and solve riddles. A last page asks children to write their own sentences.

Every practice page has an answer key, and the cut and paste pages each have a no-cut twin.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.AUse collective nouns (e.g., group).

How to use them

  1. Start with the chart. Read each pair aloud: a flock of birds, a herd of cows.
  2. Do the matching page next; pictures make the groups easy to see.
  3. Move on to the fill in the blank and choose pages.
  4. Finish with the riddles and the writing page.

Teaching tips

  • Some animals have more than one collective noun. These pages use only the common, standard ones.
  • A school of fish surprises children. Talk about why fish swimming together look like a class moving together.
  • Collective nouns usually take a singular verb: The team is ready.
  • Make a class chart and add new collective nouns as you find them in books.
