About these sight words for 2nd graders worksheets

Sight words for 2nd graders are the high frequency words children meet again and again in 2nd grade books: because, before, their, which, would, through, though, enough and more. Many have a part that doesn't follow the usual rules (the ough in through, the eir in their), and the rest show up so often that reading them instantly lets a child focus on the harder words in a sentence. This list has 50 high frequency words for 2nd graders in five sets of ten, from short words like been, both and goes to longer ones like another, different and together.

Each word has its own practice page: read it, build it from letters, trace and write it, find it among look-alike words, write it in a sentence and use it in a sentence of your own. Each set also has two fill-in sentence pages, a phrase page to read for fluency and a short story that uses every word in the set. Start with the list and flash cards, then work through one set at a time.

None of these words repeats the kindergarten or 1st grade sight word lists, so children keep moving forward. If a child still stumbles on words like could, were or once, review the 1st grade list first. Every page prints in black and white on US Letter or A4, with an answer key on page 2 where there are right answers.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.FRecognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.EIdentify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.4Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.4.ARead grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.4.BRead grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.2.DGeneralize learned spelling patterns when writing words (e.g., cage → badge; boy → boil).

How to use them

  1. Print the list and flash cards. Test the words: anything your child reads in about three seconds is known. Mark the rest on the tracker.
  2. Teach two to four new words a week with the practice page for each word: say it, spell it out loud, build it, write it, then find it.
  3. When a set is mostly known, use its sentence pages and phrase page. Reading phrases like even though or through the door helps the words come quickly in real books.
  4. Finish each set with its story. Your child reads it, circles every word from the set and answers one question.

Teaching tips

  • Point out the regular parts so there is less to memorize. In their, the th and r are regular; only the ei is tricky.
  • Teach look-alike words apart: though, thought and through are easy to mix up. Teach one, practice it well, then add the next.
  • Have your child say the letters out loud while writing. Saying, seeing and writing together helps the spelling stick.
  • A word is learned when your child reads it quickly in a sentence, not just on a card. The phrase and story pages check exactly that.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What are the sight words for 2nd graders?

The 50 words here are: been, best, both, does, goes, made, off, or, us, very, always, around, because, before, first, found, gave, pull, read, right, their, these, which, why, would, those, write, work, wash, wish, about, also, better, each, other, only, own, today, together, under, another, carry, different, enough, learn, sure, though, thought, through, until. They are common high frequency words for 2nd grade that come after the kindergarten and 1st grade lists.

What is the difference between sight words and high frequency words?

High frequency words are the words that appear most often in books. Sight words are words a child reads instantly, on sight. Many people use both names for the same list; the goal is to read these words without stopping to sound them out.

How many sight words should a 2nd grader know?

Most children finish 2nd grade reading a few hundred words on sight: the kindergarten and 1st grade words plus these and many more picked up from reading. Reading them quickly and correctly in sentences matters more than an exact count.

In what order should I teach these words?

Use the five sets in order. Set 1 has short words like been, both, does and goes; later sets add longer and trickier words like another, different, though and through.

Are these sight word worksheets free?

Yes. The list, flash cards, tracker and every practice page are free PDFs with no sign-up.
