About these spelling words for 2nd graders worksheets

These spelling words for 2nd graders come as 30 weekly lists, one for each week of the school year. Each list has 12 words: 10 that share one spelling pattern and 2 tricky words to learn by heart, plus 2 challenge words for children who are ready for more. Every list prints on its own page with the week number, the pattern, a short spelling tip and a plan for practicing at home.

The lists are organized by pattern in the order most 2nd grade classrooms teach them. Weeks 1 to 3 review short vowels and the endings ck, tch and dge. Weeks 4 to 10 cover long vowels: silent e and the vowel teams ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, igh, ie, ue and ew. Weeks 11 to 14 cover oo and the diphthongs ou, ow, oi, oy, au and aw. Weeks 15 to 18 are r-controlled vowels (ar, or, ore, er, ir, ur, air, are). Weeks 19 to 22 cover soft c and g, three-letter blends, silent letters and words ending in -le. Weeks 23 to 30 move to word parts: plurals, endings that double, drop e or change y to i, the prefixes un- and re-, the suffixes -ful, -less and -ly, compound words and contractions.

Every week has the same seven pages: the list, rainbow write, a word sort, missing letters, ABC order to the second letter, eight fill-in sentences and a test with a dictated sentence. The weekly packet puts all seven pages and the answer keys in one PDF. Need the whole year? The master list shows all 30 lists on three pages, and the spelling bee pages have 120 more words in easy, medium and hard sets. Writing lines are 2nd grade size, and every page prints in black and white on US Letter or A4.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.2.DGeneralize learned spelling patterns when writing words (e.g., cage → badge; boy → boil).
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.BKnow spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.DDecode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.EIdentify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.FRecognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.2.CUse an apostrophe to form contractions and frequently occurring possessives.

How to use them

  1. Monday: send home the list page. It shows the 12 words, the challenge words, a tip for the week's pattern and a checklist for each night.
  2. Tuesday to Thursday: use one or two practice pages a day. Rainbow write and missing letters build the spelling, the word sort and ABC order make children look closely at each word, and the sentences page checks meaning.
  3. Friday: give the test. Read each word, say it in a short sentence, then read it again. The teacher page has the words in a mixed order and a sentence to read aloud.
  4. Use the master list to plan the year, and the spelling bee pages for a class bee, extra practice or early finishers.

Teaching tips

  • Teach the pattern first. Show how the ten pattern words share the same letters (train, snail, brain), then let children find the pattern in each word.
  • For the tricky words, point out the part that breaks the rules. In young, only the ou is unexpected; the y and ng are regular.
  • In ABC order, many 2nd grade lists have words with the same first letter. Show children how to look at the second letter: snail comes before stay because n comes before t.
  • A child who writes hopeing for hoping knows the sounds and the base word; teach the drop-the-e rule and practice it again.
  • Twelve words too many? Use the ten pattern words only. Too easy? Add the two challenge words to the test.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What spelling words should a 2nd grader know?

By the end of 2nd grade, most children can spell words with long vowel teams (rain, beach, boat, night), r-controlled vowels (shark, storm, shirt, nurse), the sounds ou, ow, oi, oy, au and aw (house, crown, coin, draw), soft c and g (city, page), and words with endings, prefixes and suffixes (hopping, babies, unlock, helpful). They also spell common tricky words like because, their, though, through and enough.

How are these spelling lists organized?

By spelling pattern, one pattern a week. The year starts with short vowel review, then moves through silent e, vowel teams, oo and the diphthongs, r-controlled vowels, soft c and g, blends and silent letters, and ends with word parts: plurals, endings, prefixes, suffixes, compound words and contractions.

How many spelling words should a 2nd grader have each week?

Most 2nd grade classrooms use 10 to 15 words a week. These lists have 12: 10 pattern words and 2 tricky words, plus 2 challenge words you can add for children who are ready.

Is there a printable list for each week?

Yes. Every week has its own one-page list with the week number, the pattern, all 12 words with the pattern letters in bold, the challenge words, a spelling tip and a home practice checklist. The master list puts all 30 weeks on three pages.

Do you have spelling bee words for 2nd grade?

Yes. The spelling bee pages have 120 practice words at a 2nd grade level, 40 each in easy, medium and hard sets, with check boxes and tips for practicing out loud.

Do the practice pages have answer keys?

Yes. The word sort, missing letters, ABC order and sentences pages have an answer key on page 2, and the test has a teacher page with the words in test order and a sentence to read aloud.

Are these spelling worksheets free?

Yes. Every list and practice page is a free PDF to print at home or school, with no sign-up.
