About these i spy worksheets

I spy pages are a fun way to practice looking closely and counting. Each page has a field of pictures scattered across it: farm animals, bugs, fruit, toys, shapes, letters and more. Children hunt for one kind of picture at a time, count how many they find, and record the number.

Below the pictures, each kind has its own row. Children color one box in the ten frame for each picture they find, then write the number in the box, or say it while a grown-up writes it. The ten frame shows the amount in a way they can see, which helps them connect counting to the number.

The pages start easier, with four kinds of pictures, and grow to five and six kinds. No picture overlaps another, and every count is 10 or less. Each worksheet has an answer key on page 2 with the frames filled in and the right numbers.

Standards

  • ELOF P-MATH 2Child recognizes the number of objects in a small set.
  • ELOF P-MATH 3Child understands the relationship between numbers and quantities.
  • ELOF P-ATL 6Child maintains focus and sustains attention with minimal adult support.
  • ELOF P-MATH 9Child identifies, describes, compares, and composes shapes.
  • ELOF P-LIT 3Child identifies letters of the alphabet and produces correct sounds associated with letters.

How to use them

  1. Name each picture in the rows at the bottom together before you start.
  2. Pick one kind of picture. Find each one in the field and mark it with a small dot or a light crayon line so it is not counted twice.
  3. Color one box in the ten frame for each picture found, then count the colored boxes and write or say the number.
  4. Start with shapes, letters, fall or winter (four kinds), then move to the five and six kind pages.
  5. Check the counts with the answer key on page 2.

Teaching tips

  • Crossing off or dotting each picture as it is counted is the best way to stop children counting the same picture twice.
  • If writing numbers is hard, children can trace a number you write lightly, or just color the ten frame.
  • Talk about the totals: "Are there more cats or more dogs? How do you know?"
  • Keep sessions short. One or two kinds at a time is plenty for a 3 year old.
