About these irregular plural nouns worksheets
Most nouns add -s or -es to mean more than one. Irregular plural nouns change in a special way: one child becomes two children, one tooth becomes two teeth, one mouse becomes two mice, and some nouns, like fish, sheep and deer, stay the same.
These irregular plural nouns worksheets start with a chart that groups the plurals by how they change. Practice pages ask children to write the plural, choose the right plural in a sentence, sort regular and irregular plurals (cut and paste or write), fix the wrong plural in a sentence, match singular to plural, and write their own sentences.
Every page with right answers has an answer key.
Standards
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.BForm and use frequently occurring irregular plural nouns (e.g., feet, children, teeth, mice, fish).
How to use them
- Start with the chart and say each pair aloud.
- Do the write the plural pages, using the chart for help at first.
- Use the sort to compare regular plurals (dogs, boxes) with irregular ones.
- Finish with fix the plural and the writing page.
Teaching tips
- Children often overgeneralize: mouses, foots, childs. That is a normal step.
- Fish, sheep, deer and moose stay the same for one or many.
- Some words change f to v and add -es: leaf, leaves; wolf, wolves.
- Read the plurals in context. Hearing them in sentences helps them stick.
