About these kindergarten addition worksheets

These kindergarten addition worksheets start where children start: with things they can count. Picture addition pages show two groups of simple drawn objects, like apples, stars and squares. Your child counts both groups and writes how many in all. Then the addition sentence pages ask for the whole sentence, 3 + 2 = 5, so the plus and equal signs start to mean something.

From there, the sheets move to ten frames, where the filled dots and open dots show the two parts, and to a 0–10 number line, where children hop forward. Fact pages practice adding within 5 until it is quick, then within 10. The word problem pages are meant to be read aloud: you read the story, and your child draws it and writes the number sentence.

Every answer box is big enough for a kindergartner's handwriting, and every page that has right answers comes with an answer key on page 2. All the pictures are simple black-and-white shapes, so the pages copy well and use little ink.

Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.1Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds, acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.2Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.5Fluently add and subtract within 5.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.CUnderstand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.

How to use them

  1. Start with real objects. Put out 2 blocks and 3 more, push them together and count them all. Then do the same thing on the picture addition pages.
  2. Use addition with pictures before numbers alone. Work through the within 5 pages first, then the within 10 pages.
  3. On the ten frame pages, have your child count the filled dots, then keep counting the open dots. Saying the first number and counting on ("5… 6, 7, 8") is a big step.
  4. For the number line pages, put a finger on the dot, then hop one space at a time while counting the hops out loud.
  5. Read the word problems aloud, one at a time. Let your child draw circles, tallies or simple pictures in the Draw it box before writing the numbers.
  6. Use the fact pages for short, regular practice. A few minutes a day works better than a long session once a week.

Teaching tips

  • If your child recounts the first group every time, cover it with your hand and say its number. Then count on from there.
  • Some children write the answer to 4 + 1 as 41. Point to each box and say, "One number goes in each box."
  • Adding 0 can be confusing. Act it out: "You have 3 apples and I give you none. How many now?"
  • Turnarounds help: once your child knows 4 + 1 = 5, show that 1 + 4 is 5 too.
  • For children who are ready for more, ask them to make up their own story for a fact, like 3 + 4.
  • For children who need more support, use real counters on top of the pictures and the ten frames.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What addition should a kindergartner know?

By the end of kindergarten, children add within 10 using objects, drawings or fingers, solve simple addition word problems, and add within 5 quickly and without counters.

What is picture addition?

Picture addition, or addition with pictures, shows two groups of objects with a plus sign between them. Children count both groups and write how many in all. It connects counting to the written sentence.

When should my child stop using pictures?

When they can answer within 5 quickly and correctly without counting objects, move to the fact pages. Keep pictures and ten frames for sums up to 10 a while longer.

Do these worksheets have answer keys?

Yes. Every addition worksheet has an answer key on page 2 of the PDF. The word problem keys also show one way to draw each story.

Are these sheets free?

Yes. Every PDF is free to download and print for home or classroom use. There is no sign-up.
