Trees outside and through the seasons

About these parts of a tree worksheets

A tree is a plant too, just a very big one. These parts of a tree worksheets use one detailed tree drawing with leafy branches, a trunk covered in bark, and roots spreading wide under the ground. Children learn five parts: roots, trunk, bark, branches and leaves.

Start with the parts of a tree chart, which says what each part does. Then children label the tree from a word bank, or cut out the words and glue them in the boxes, and color each part with the crayon named beside it.

Two pages send children outside. The tree observation page has a spot for a bark rubbing and a leaf drawing, and the four seasons page has children draw the same tree in spring, summer, fall and winter.

Standards

  • NGSS K-LS1-1Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
  • NGSS K-ESS2-1Use and share observations of local weather conditions to describe patterns over time.
  • NGSS 4-LS1-1Grade 4, introduced early: construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.2Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.6Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts.

How to use them

  1. Pick one tree near your school or home to visit through the year.
  2. Read the chart together, then touch the bark and look up at the branches on a real tree.
  3. Use the label it or cut and paste page, then the color page as a review.
  4. Take the observation page outside with crayons for a bark rubbing.

Teaching tips

  • The trunk is the tree's stem. Bark is the tough outside that protects it, like skin.
  • Roots spread out wide under the ground, often wider than the branches above.
  • The leafy top of a tree is made of its branches and leaves together.
  • If your tree is a pine, talk about why it looks green in every season.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What are the parts of a tree for kids?

Roots hold the tree in the ground and drink water. The trunk is the tree's thick stem, covered in bark. Branches hold up the leaves, and the leaves use sunlight to make food.

Why do trees lose their leaves in fall?

Many trees drop their leaves when days get short and cold. They rest through winter with bare branches and grow new leaves in spring.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The label it and cut and paste pages each have an answer key on page 2.
