About these skip counting worksheets
Skip counting means counting forward by the same amount each time: 5, 10, 15, 20. It speeds up counting, builds number sense, and leads straight into multiplication.
Children start with 10s, 5s and 2s, move to counting by 100s within 1,000, and in 3rd grade skip count by 3s through 9s to learn the multiples in each times table.
The sheets are grouped by grade below, and the practice sheets have answer keys.
Standards
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.1Count to 100 by ones and by tens.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.2Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.C.7Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
How to use them
- Count aloud together before writing, clapping on each number.
- Use a hundred chart and color each number you land on to see the pattern.
- Count real things in groups: pairs of socks by 2s, fingers by 5s, dimes by 10s.
- In 3rd grade, use the skip counting charts as a bridge to the times tables.
Teaching tips
- Counting by 10s from any number changes only the tens digit: 23, 33, 43.
- Counting by 5s always ends in 5 or 0.
- Counting by 2s from 0 lands on the even numbers.
- If a child gets lost, go back to the last number they are sure of and add again.
Questions teachers and parents ask
What is skip counting?
Skip counting is counting forward by a number other than 1, such as 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10, 20, 30. Each number is the one before plus the same amount.
How does skip counting help with multiplication?
Counting by 6s to the fourth number gives 6, 12, 18, 24, which is 4 × 6 = 24. Children who can skip count by a number can always work out its times table.
