About these ch words worksheets

The letters ch make one short sound, like a sneeze or a train: ch, ch. Children often learn it right after sh, and comparing the two helps both stick.

ch words at the beginning: chin, chip, chop, chat, chick, check, chest, chair, cheese, child. ch words at the end: much, such, rich, inch, lunch, bunch, bench, beach, peach, couch. The one-page ch word list below has them in big print, with pictures for the ones a child can see.

Digraphs are a 1st grade skill that many children start late in kindergarten. The pages below go from hearing ch, to writing it, to reading it in short sentences.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3.AKnow the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3.BDecode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

How to use them

  1. Read the word list together. Say the ch sound, then the word: ch, chin.
  2. On the picture page, name each picture out loud. Your child circles the pictures with the ch sound and skips the sh look-alikes like sheep and shoe.
  3. On the fill-in page, your child writes ch in the boxes at the start or end of each word, then reads the word.
  4. Use the sentence page last: read each sentence and circle the matching picture.

Teaching tips

  • ch and sh are easy to mix up. Hold a hand in front of your mouth: sh is a long, steady stream of air; ch is one quick puff.
  • Some ch words end in tch (watch, catch). The t is silent, so treat tch as ch with a helper letter.
  • If your child writes c for ch, say the word slowly and ask, “Is that a c sound or the train sound?”
  • Make a ch snack list: cheese, chips, cherries, chicken, peach.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What are some ch words for kids?

Easy ch words include chin, chip, chop, chat, much, such and rich. Picture words like chair, cheese, chick, cherries, watch and beach help pre-readers.

Does ch always say the same sound?

In early reading words, ch almost always says ch as in chair. Later, children meet other sounds, like k in school and sh in chef.

Why does watch have a t?

After a short vowel, the ch sound is often spelled tch: watch, catch, itch. The t is silent.
