About these christmas math worksheets

These Christmas math worksheets cover every grade from preschool to 5th, so one page serves a whole school. Younger children count ornaments, add and subtract with pictures, and make holiday patterns. 1st and 2nd graders solve Christmas word problems and add with regrouping.

From 3rd grade up, the skills get bigger: color-by-number mystery pictures for multiplication and division, secret message puzzles, the 12 Days of Christmas as a number pattern, long division for packing ornaments, cookie tray fractions, decimal shopping at a holiday market, gift box volume and a mystery tree on the coordinate plane.

Every page with one right answer has an answer key. For reading and writing too, open the Christmas worksheets page for your grade from the main Christmas worksheets page.

Standards

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.5Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.A.1Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.C.7Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.D.8Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.6Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.A.3Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.B.3.DSolve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.B.6Solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.C.5Relate volume to the operations of multiplication and addition and solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.G.A.1Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).

How to use them

  1. Pick the group for your grade, or one grade down for an easy warm-up during a busy December week.
  2. Color-by-number and secret message pages work well as early-finisher or center work: the picture or message shows children whether they are right.
  3. Use the word problem pages in pairs, with one child solving and the other checking the work.

Teaching tips

  • For a mixed-grade group, give everyone the same theme (a cookie tray, the 12 Days) at different levels.
  • Not every family celebrates Christmas. The winter math worksheets make a good swap.

Questions teachers and parents ask

Is there a Christmas color by number for multiplication?

Yes. 3rd grade has a multiplication tree and a division gift, and 4th grade has an ornament that practices multiplying by tens. Each key shows the finished picture.

Which grades are covered?

Preschool, kindergarten and 1st to 5th grade, each in its own group on this page.

Do the pages have answer keys?

Every page with one right answer has a key, usually on page 2, with the work shown for word problems.
