About these possessive nouns worksheets
A possessive noun shows who or what owns something. For one owner, add an apostrophe and s: the cat's bowl. For more than one owner when the plural ends in s, add just an apostrophe: the cats' bowls. For a plural that does not end in s, add an apostrophe and s: the children's books, the men's hats.
These possessive nouns worksheets start with a chart of the three rules. Practice pages ask children to decide if a possessive is singular or plural, write the possessive form, rewrite phrases (the toys of the dogs becomes the dogs' toys), choose the right form in a sentence, tell plural nouns from possessive nouns, fix mistakes, and sort (cut and paste or write). Every page has an answer key.
Standards
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.2.DForm and use possessives.
How to use them
- Start with the chart and label things in the room: the teacher's desk, the students' coats.
- Do singular or plural next. Look at where the apostrophe sits.
- Use the write, rewrite, and choose pages.
- Finish with plural or possessive and the fix-it page.
Teaching tips
- First decide: one owner or more than one? Then write the owner word, then add the apostrophe.
- A plural that does not own anything needs no apostrophe: two dogs barked.
- Words like children, men, women, mice, and geese add 's.
- Its (belonging to it) has no apostrophe. It's means it is.
Questions teachers and parents ask
How do you make a plural noun possessive?
If the plural ends in s, add an apostrophe after the s (the girls' team). If it does not end in s, add 's (the children's library).
What is the difference between a plural and a possessive noun?
A plural means more than one (dogs). A possessive shows ownership (the dog's bone, the dogs' bones).
Do the worksheets have answer keys?
Yes. Every page with right answers has an answer key on page 2. Written answers show an example.
