About these producers and consumers worksheets

Everyone in a community is a consumer, and most grown-ups are producers too. Second graders learn that producers make goods or give services, consumers buy and use them, and one person can be both.

These producers and consumers worksheets start with a poster, then sort sentences as a table or a cut and paste page. Children follow wheat from a farm to a family’s table to see how many producers help make one loaf of bread, match community producers to their work, and read a story about a girl who runs a lemonade stand.

Pages are black and white with short directions a 2nd grader can read, print on US Letter or A4, and have answer keys on page 2 when there are right answers.

Standards

  • C3 D2.Eco.3.K-2Describe the skills and knowledge required to produce certain goods and services.
  • C3 D2.Eco.6.K-2Explain how people earn income.

How to use them

  1. Start with the poster and ask: who in your family is a producer? What do they make or do?
  2. Use the sort or its cut and paste twin. Talk about why the same person can be a producer in one sentence and a consumer in another.
  3. Do the wheat to bread sequence with real bread and flour on the table.
  4. Read the lemonade stand story, then let children plan their own good or service on the writing page.
  5. Use the true or false page as a quick check.

Teaching tips

  • Goods are things you can touch. Services are work someone does for you.
  • A person is a producer while making or selling and a consumer while buying or using. Ask “what is the person doing in this sentence?”
  • Producers earn money (income) from consumers, and then use it to be consumers themselves.
  • Connect to math: prices at the lemonade stand are a natural money word problem.
  • For early readers, read the sentence sorts aloud and let children point.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What is the difference between a producer and a consumer?

A producer makes goods or provides services, like a farmer, a baker or a dentist. A consumer buys and uses goods and services. Everyone is a consumer, and a person can be both.

Is a teacher a producer?

Yes. A teacher is a producer of a service: teaching. Teachers are consumers too when they buy groceries or get a haircut.

Are there answer keys?

Yes, on page 2 of every page with right answers. The poster and the writing page have no key.
