About these sight words for 3rd graders worksheets

Sight words for 3rd graders are the common words that show up again and again in chapter books and nonfiction, but are hard to sound out or easy to misspell: words like although, bought, either, minute, probably and whether. Reading them instantly frees children to think about what the text means, and spelling them right makes their writing easier to read.

This list has 50 3rd grade high frequency words in five sets of ten, and none of them repeats our kindergarten, 1st grade or 2nd grade lists. Set 1 starts with across, along, already, anything and became; set 5 ends with although, believe, hundred and whether.

Each word has its own two-page practice sheet: read it, build it from letters, trace and write it, find it among look-alike words, use it in a sentence and write a sentence of your own, with an answer key. Each set also has sentence pages, a fluency page of short phrases and a short story to read. The list, flash cards and tracker cover all 50 words.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3.DRead grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.4.ARead grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.4.BRead grade-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.2.EUse conventional spelling for high-frequency and other studied words and for adding suffixes to base words (e.g., sitting, smiled, cries, happiness).

How to use them

  1. Start with the list or the tracker to see which words a child already reads and spells. Then teach one set of ten at a time.
  2. Use one practice page a day, then the set's sentence pages to check meaning. The phrase page builds smooth reading; have children read it three times.
  3. Finish each set with its story: children read it, circle the set's words and answer a question.
  4. Cut out the flash cards for a quick daily review, and color the tracker as words are learned.

Teaching tips

  • Many 3rd grade sight words are easy to read but hard to spell (believe, although, whether). Have children say the tricky part out loud as they write it: be-LIEVE has ie.
  • Pair look-alike words on purpose: quiet and quite, though and through, whether and weather. The find-it grids mix in these look-alikes.
  • Practice in short bursts. Two minutes of flash cards every day beats one long session a week.
  • Words a child misses on the tracker can go on the next week's spelling list.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What are sight words for 3rd graders?

They are common words a 3rd grader should read instantly and spell correctly, often because part of the word doesn't follow the usual rules: bought, either, minute, women, whether.

How many sight words should a 3rd grader know?

By 3rd grade most children read a few hundred high frequency words. This list adds 50 more, chosen so none repeats the kindergarten, 1st grade or 2nd grade lists on this site.

Are sight words still important in 3rd grade?

Yes, mainly for spelling and fluency. Reading these words without stopping keeps attention on meaning, and spelling them right makes writing clearer.
