About spelling and vocabulary for 3rd graders

In 3rd grade, word study shifts from sounding out short words to understanding long ones. Children spell words with endings and word parts (hurried, happiness, misspell, washable), read multisyllable words by their syllable types, learn the homophones that trip up writers (their, there, they're), and start using dictionaries and glossaries to check spellings and meanings.

These spelling and vocabulary worksheets for 3rd graders cover all of it. The 30 weekly spelling lists come with seven practice pages each, a weekly packet, a master list and spelling bee words. The 50 sight words and 40 vocabulary words each have lists, cards and practice pages, and the word study pages teach prefixes and suffixes, root words, syllable types, homophones and dictionary skills.

Writing lines are 3rd grade size, directions are written for children to read on their own, and every page prints in black and white on US Letter or A4. Pages with right answers have an answer key on page 2, and each cut and paste page has a no-cut twin.

Questions

What spelling skills are taught in 3rd grade?

3rd graders spell words with common patterns and word parts: adding -ed, -ing and other suffixes (sitting, cries, happiness), plurals, prefixes like dis- and mis-, and endings like -tion and -ture. They also learn to check spellings in a dictionary.

How many spelling words should a 3rd grader learn each week?

Usually 12 to 20. Our weekly lists have 15 pattern words plus 3 challenge words.

What is the difference between sight words and vocabulary words?

Sight words are common words to read and spell instantly (although, bought, whether). Vocabulary words are words whose meaning children are learning (generous, investigate, climate).

Are these worksheets free?

Yes. Every worksheet is a free PDF with no sign-up, ready to print at home or school.
