About these thanksgiving for 4th graders worksheets

These Thanksgiving worksheets for 4th graders dress real grade 4 skills for the holiday. In math, children add and subtract big numbers in stories about the parade, a turkey farm and a food drive, solve multi-step problems and decide what a remainder means when setting tables for a community dinner, multiply fractions by whole numbers to triple a recipe, convert hours, pounds and liters in kitchen problems, read a line plot of green bean lengths in eighths of an inch and color a pumpkin by multiplying 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers.

In reading there is an original nonfiction text about how cranberries are harvested and a story about a boy who bakes his grandfather's cornbread from a smudged recipe card. Children write a how-to on making a thankful tree and an opinion essay on whether kids should help cook the holiday meal, and practice relative pronouns. Every page is black and white, prints on US Letter or A4, and pages with one right answer have an answer key at the end of the PDF. See also Thanksgiving Math Worksheets for every grade.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.1.AUse relative pronouns (who, whose, whom, which, that) and relative adverbs (where, when, why).
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.3Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.2Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.1Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.2Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.B.4Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.4Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.5Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.B.4.CSolve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, if each person at a party will eat 3/8 of a pound of roast beef, and there will be 5 people at the party, how many pounds of roast beef will be needed? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.A.3Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

How to use them

  1. Pick a math page and a literacy page for each day of the short week before Thanksgiving.
  2. On the multi-digit problems, have children estimate first and compare the estimate with their answer.
  3. Bring a real recipe card to the recipe fractions page and let children scale it for their own family.
  4. Read the cranberry text aloud once, then have children reread for the order of the wet harvest steps.

Teaching tips

  • Remainder problems: ask "Do we round up, drop it, or is the remainder the answer?" before children write anything.
  • On recipe fractions, a fraction strip or a quick drawing of equal groups (3 groups of 3/4) helps children see the product.
  • Line plots in eighths are easier when children first write each label as eighths, then simplify the answer.
  • Keep the talk about being thankful rather than about what people have; not every child has a big holiday meal.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What is on these Thanksgiving worksheets for 4th graders?

Multi-digit word problems with estimates, multi-step and remainder problems, a 2-digit by 1-digit color by number, recipe fractions, measurement word problems, a line plot in eighths, two reading passages, how-to and opinion writing and relative pronouns: 11 pages in all.

Do the pages have answer keys?

Yes. Every page with one right answer has an answer key at the end of the same PDF. Writing pages have a planning row and a checklist instead.

Are the facts in the cranberry text accurate?

Yes. The text was written for these pages, and its facts (bogs, the wet and dry harvest, the air pockets that make berries float, the main growing states) were checked.

Can I use these pages if my students do not celebrate Thanksgiving?

Yes. They are about food, family, the harvest and gratitude, and every page practices a regular 4th grade skill.
