These Thanksgiving worksheets for 5th graders practice the top skills of elementary math and literacy with a holiday theme. Children solve multi-step problems with 2-digit divisors about parade bleachers and a food bank, add, subtract, multiply and divide money on a grocery trip, scale recipes by multiplying fractions and mixed numbers, find the volume of pie boxes and coolers, plot ordered pairs to draw a mystery turkey and use fraction operations on a line plot of pie recipes.
In reading there are two original nonfiction texts: harvest celebrations around the world (Canada, Korea, the Mid-Autumn Festival and Japan) and the science of cooking a turkey safely. Children write an argument about the length of Thanksgiving break and a personal narrative about someone they want to thank, and practice correlative conjunctions. Every page is black and white, prints on US Letter or A4, and pages with one right answer have an answer key at the end of the PDF. See also Thanksgiving Math Worksheets for every grade.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.1.EUse correlative conjunctions (e.g., either/or, neither/nor).CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.2Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.3Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.1Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.3Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.G.A.2Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.B.2Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.C.5.BApply the formulas V = l × w × h and V = b × h for rectangular prisms to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with whole-number edge lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.6Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.B.6Solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.Multi-step word problems, decimal money problems, recipe fractions, volume of food boxes, a turkey coordinate mystery picture, a line plot with fraction operations, two nonfiction reading passages, argument and narrative writing and correlative conjunctions: 11 pages in all.
Yes. Every page with one right answer has an answer key at the end of the same PDF, including the finished coordinate picture.
Yes. The text follows standard food safety guidance: thaw in the refrigerator, keep raw juices away from other food, cook to 165°F and chill leftovers within two hours.
No. The pages are about the harvest, food, family and gratitude, including how other countries give thanks for the harvest.
