About these timelines worksheets

A timeline shows events in the order they happened, from earlier on the left to later on the right. Second graders read timelines with years, put events in order, and make timelines about their own lives.

These timeline worksheets start with a child’s life timeline and a timeline of inventions, each with questions. Children put a school day and a pumpkin patch season in order, practice the words past, present, future, decade and century, and make their own timelines of the school year and their family.

Pages are black and white with short directions a 2nd grader can read, print on US Letter or A4, and have answer keys on page 2 when there are right answers.

Standards

  • C3 D2.His.1.K-2Create a chronological sequence of multiple events.

How to use them

  1. Make a human timeline first: children hold cards with years and line up in order.
  2. Read Ava’s timeline together, then let children answer the questions on their own.
  3. Use the school day cut and paste page or its numbering twin as a quick check of time order.
  4. Send the family timeline home so a grown-up can help fill in the years.
  5. Keep the school year timeline on the wall and add to it each month.

Teaching tips

  • Timelines read left to right, like a sentence. The oldest events are on the left.
  • A decade is 10 years. A century is 100 years.
  • Subtracting years answers “how long ago” and “how old” questions, a good link to 2nd grade math.
  • When years are far apart, the spaces on a real timeline should be wider. Our practice timelines space stops evenly so they are easy to read; point this out to strong students.
  • Invention dates mark when each one first worked well, not when everyone had one.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How do you read a timeline?

Start at the left with the earliest event and move right. Each event is placed at the year or time it happened, so you can see what came first, what came next and how far apart events were.

What timelines can 2nd graders make?

A timeline of their own life, of a school day, of a school year, or of their family’s history, with a grown-up’s help.
