About these vocabulary words for 3rd graders worksheets

These vocabulary words for 3rd graders are the kind of words children meet in chapter books, science and social studies, and classroom directions: character words like generous and stubborn, action words like investigate and persuade, school words like summarize and evidence, and world words like climate, resource and tradition.

The 40 words come in four sets of ten. Each word has a kid-friendly meaning and an example sentence on the list and the word cards. For each set there is a match-the-meaning page and a sentence page where children choose the word that fits, both with answer keys.

Word meaning skills go further: shades of meaning for feelings (worried, terrified) and for how sure someone is (guessed, believed, knew), real-life connections between words and children's own lives, multiple-meaning words like scale and current, and a word map for any new word. Every page prints in black and white on US Letter or A4.

Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.6Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate conversational, general academic, and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal spatial and temporal relationships (e.g., After dinner that night we went looking for them).
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.4.AUse sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.5.BIdentify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., describe people who are friendly or helpful).
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.5.CDistinguish shades of meaning among related words that describe states of mind or degrees of certainty (e.g., knew, believed, suspected, heard, wondered).
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.4Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning word and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.

How to use them

  1. Introduce one set a week. Read each word card together, talk about the meaning, and have children say their own sentence.
  2. Midweek, use the match-the-meaning page; at the end of the week, use the sentence page to check that children can use each word.
  3. Add the shades of meaning and real-life connection pages for discussion; they work well with a partner.
  4. Use the word map for new words from read-alouds or science and social studies units.

Teaching tips

  • A word sticks when children use it. Challenge the class to use the week's words in conversation and keep a tally.
  • Act out character words: show timid, show confident, show stubborn.
  • On the shades of meaning pages, there can be good discussion about the middle word. Ask children to explain their order.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What vocabulary words should a 3rd grader know?

3rd graders learn many words from reading and from science and social studies: describing words (generous, cautious), academic words (summarize, evidence, conclude) and subject words (climate, resource, ancestor). This list has 40 of them with meanings.

How do I teach vocabulary words to my 3rd grader?

Introduce a few words at a time with a simple meaning and an example, then have your child use each word in their own sentence, match words to meanings and find them in books.

What are shades of meaning?

Words with almost the same meaning but different strength, like worried and terrified, or believed and knew. 3rd graders learn to put them in order.
