About these letter D worksheets

This is cursive D and d in modern cursive: joined lowercase letters with simple capitals. How to write lowercase d: start just below the midline. Curve back and around like an a, push up to the top line, pull straight down to the baseline and flick out. How to write uppercase D: pull straight down from the top line. Go back to the top and make one big curve forward, down to the baseline.

Lowercase d ends with a flick on the baseline that swings straight up into the next letter, so ddd and words like dog are written without lifting the pencil. In the usual teaching order, d is learned with the downcurve letters (a, d, g, o, c, q).

The four worksheets below start with a large chart of D, d and ddd, then give a page each for lowercase d, uppercase D, and joins and words such as dog, duck, desk, door, dig and drum.

Standards

  • Texas TEKS Grade 2 (handwriting)develop handwriting by accurately forming all cursive letters using appropriate strokes when connecting letters
  • Texas TEKS Grade 3 (handwriting)write complete words, thoughts, and answers legibly in cursive leaving appropriate spaces between words

How to use them

  1. Start with the chart page. Read the steps aloud while your child traces the big d with a finger, then writes it on the rows below.
  2. On the lowercase page, trace each single d, then the joined ddd, then write your own on the blank rows.
  3. Use the uppercase page for D and names like Dan, Dee and Dora.
  4. Finish with the words page: the joins, the words dog, duck and desk, and the sentence “Dad dug a deep ditch.”

Teaching tips for D

  • Lowercase d: Start just below the midline. Curve back and around like an a, push up to the top line, pull straight down to the baseline and flick out.
  • Uppercase D: Pull straight down from the top line. Go back to the top and make one big curve forward, down to the baseline.
  • Watch for d and b mix-ups. The d starts like a and c, with the round part first, then the tall line.
  • Print at actual size (100%). The gray letters are solid, so they copy cleanly, and each row has a black model at both ends for left-handed writers.

Questions about letter D

How do you write a cursive d?

Start just below the midline. Curve back and around like an a, push up to the top line, pull straight down to the baseline and flick out.

How do you write a capital D in cursive?

In modern cursive: pull straight down from the top line. Go back to the top and make one big curve forward, down to the baseline. Capitals don't join to the next letter, so write the D, then start the lowercase letters close by.

How does cursive d join to other letters?

The d ends with a small flick on the baseline. Keep going from the flick up into the next letter without lifting the pencil, as in da, de and di.
