About these letter F worksheets

This is cursive F and f in modern cursive: joined lowercase letters with simple capitals. How to write lowercase f: make a thin loop up to the top line, then pull straight down past the baseline to the line below. Loop back to the left at the bottom and come up to the baseline, ending with a flick to the right. How to write uppercase F: pull straight down from the top line. Slide right along the top line, then slide right along the midline.

Lowercase f loops below the baseline and swings back up into the next letter, so fff and words like fan are written without lifting the pencil. In the usual teaching order, f is learned with the undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, e, l, b, h, f, k, r, s, j, p).

The four worksheets below start with a large chart of F, f and fff, then give a page each for lowercase f, uppercase F, and joins and words such as fan, fish, fox, frog, five and fun.

Standards

  • Texas TEKS Grade 2 (handwriting)develop handwriting by accurately forming all cursive letters using appropriate strokes when connecting letters
  • Texas TEKS Grade 3 (handwriting)write complete words, thoughts, and answers legibly in cursive leaving appropriate spaces between words

How to use them

  1. Start with the chart page. Read the steps aloud while your child traces the big f with a finger, then writes it on the rows below.
  2. On the lowercase page, trace each single f, then the joined fff, then write your own on the blank rows.
  3. Use the uppercase page for F and names like Fay, Finn and Flo.
  4. Finish with the words page: the joins, the words fan, fish and fox, and the sentence “Five fish swim fast.”

Teaching tips for F

  • Lowercase f: Make a thin loop up to the top line, then pull straight down past the baseline to the line below. Loop back to the left at the bottom and come up to the baseline, ending with a flick to the right.
  • Uppercase F: Pull straight down from the top line. Slide right along the top line, then slide right along the midline.
  • Watch for an f with a crossbar or only one loop. This f has a thin loop at the top and a loop below the baseline.
  • Print at actual size (100%). The gray letters are solid, so they copy cleanly, and each row has a black model at both ends for left-handed writers.
