About these letter N worksheets

This is cursive N and n in modern cursive: joined lowercase letters with simple capitals. How to write lowercase n: start at the midline. Pull down to the baseline, push up and go over the hump, pull down to the baseline and flick out. How to write uppercase N: pull straight down on the left. Go back to the top, slant down to the bottom right and push straight up to the top line.

Lowercase n ends with a flick on the baseline that swings straight up into the next letter, so nnn and words like net are written without lifting the pencil. In the usual teaching order, n is learned with the overcurve letters (n, m, x, y, v, z).

The four worksheets below start with a large chart of N, n and nnn, then give a page each for lowercase n, uppercase N, and joins and words such as net, nut, nap, nest, nine and nose.

Standards

  • Texas TEKS Grade 2 (handwriting)develop handwriting by accurately forming all cursive letters using appropriate strokes when connecting letters
  • Texas TEKS Grade 3 (handwriting)write complete words, thoughts, and answers legibly in cursive leaving appropriate spaces between words

How to use them

  1. Start with the chart page. Read the steps aloud while your child traces the big n with a finger, then writes it on the rows below.
  2. On the lowercase page, trace each single n, then the joined nnn, then write your own on the blank rows.
  3. Use the uppercase page for N and names like Nan, Ned and Nia.
  4. Finish with the words page: the joins, the words net, nut and nap, and the sentence “Nine nuts sit in a nest.”

Teaching tips for N

  • Lowercase n: Start at the midline. Pull down to the baseline, push up and go over the hump, pull down to the baseline and flick out.
  • Uppercase N: Pull straight down on the left. Go back to the top, slant down to the bottom right and push straight up to the top line.
  • Watch for n and u mix-ups. The n goes over the hump; the u goes around the bottom.
  • Print at actual size (100%). The gray letters are solid, so they copy cleanly, and each row has a black model at both ends for left-handed writers.
