About these letter O worksheets

This is cursive O and o in modern cursive: joined lowercase letters with simple capitals. How to write lowercase o: start at the midline. Curve back and all the way around to close the circle. The o leaves from the top, along the midline, to join the next letter. How to write uppercase O: start at the top. Curve back and all the way around to close it.

Lowercase o finishes with a small curl at the midline, so the next letter joins along the top instead of swinging up from the baseline: try oa, oe and oi. In the usual teaching order, o is learned with the downcurve letters (a, d, g, o, c, q).

The four worksheets below start with a large chart of O, o and ooo, then give a page each for lowercase o, uppercase O, and joins and words such as ox, on, odd, otter, olive and octopus.

Standards

  • Texas TEKS Grade 2 (handwriting)develop handwriting by accurately forming all cursive letters using appropriate strokes when connecting letters
  • Texas TEKS Grade 3 (handwriting)write complete words, thoughts, and answers legibly in cursive leaving appropriate spaces between words

How to use them

  1. Start with the chart page. Read the steps aloud while your child traces the big o with a finger, then writes it on the rows below.
  2. On the lowercase page, trace each single o, then the joined ooo, then write your own on the blank rows.
  3. Use the uppercase page for O and names like Otis, Ola and Oz.
  4. Finish with the words page: the joins, the words ox, on and odd, and the sentence “An owl sat on an oak.”

Teaching tips for O

  • Lowercase o: Start at the midline. Curve back and all the way around to close the circle. The o leaves from the top, along the midline, to join the next letter.
  • Uppercase O: Start at the top. Curve back and all the way around to close it.
  • Watch for an o that leaves from the bottom. It joins along the top, at the midline.
  • Print at actual size (100%). The gray letters are solid, so they copy cleanly, and each row has a black model at both ends for left-handed writers.

Questions about letter O

How do you write a cursive o?

Start at the midline. Curve back and all the way around to close the circle. The o leaves from the top, along the midline, to join the next letter.

How do you write a capital O in cursive?

In modern cursive: start at the top. Curve back and all the way around to close it. Capitals don't join to the next letter, so write the O, then start the lowercase letters close by.

How does cursive o join to other letters?

The o ends at the midline, not on the baseline, so the join slides along the top into the next letter. That's why oa and oe look different from words where the join swings up from the baseline.
