About these letter W worksheets

This is cursive W and w in modern cursive: joined lowercase letters with simple capitals. How to write lowercase w: start at the midline. Pull down, curve up to the midline, pull down again, curve up to the midline and finish with a small curl that joins along the midline. How to write uppercase W: start at the top line. Slant down, up, down and up again.

Lowercase w finishes with a small curl at the midline, so the next letter joins along the top instead of swinging up from the baseline: try wa, we and wi. In the usual teaching order, w is learned with the undercurve letters (i, t, u, w, e, l, b, h, f, k, r, s, j, p).

The four worksheets below start with a large chart of W, w and www, then give a page each for lowercase w, uppercase W, and joins and words such as wet, web, wig, wind, wave and wolf.

Standards

  • Texas TEKS Grade 2 (handwriting)develop handwriting by accurately forming all cursive letters using appropriate strokes when connecting letters
  • Texas TEKS Grade 3 (handwriting)write complete words, thoughts, and answers legibly in cursive leaving appropriate spaces between words

How to use them

  1. Start with the chart page. Read the steps aloud while your child traces the big w with a finger, then writes it on the rows below.
  2. On the lowercase page, trace each single w, then the joined www, then write your own on the blank rows.
  3. Use the uppercase page for W and names like Will, Wes and Wren.
  4. Finish with the words page: the joins, the words wet, web and wig, and the sentence “We walk in the wind.”

Teaching tips for W

  • Lowercase w: Start at the midline. Pull down, curve up to the midline, pull down again, curve up to the midline and finish with a small curl that joins along the midline.
  • Uppercase W: Start at the top line. Slant down, up, down and up again.
  • Watch for a w with too many bumps. It goes down and up twice, then curls at the top.
  • Print at actual size (100%). The gray letters are solid, so they copy cleanly, and each row has a black model at both ends for left-handed writers.

Questions about letter W

How do you write a cursive w?

Start at the midline. Pull down, curve up to the midline, pull down again, curve up to the midline and finish with a small curl that joins along the midline.

How do you write a capital W in cursive?

In modern cursive: start at the top line. Slant down, up, down and up again. Capitals don't join to the next letter, so write the W, then start the lowercase letters close by.

How does cursive w join to other letters?

The w ends at the midline, not on the baseline, so the join slides along the top into the next letter. That's why wa and we look different from words where the join swings up from the baseline.
